HISTORY
Ossett Town celebrated its 70th Anniversary last season, finishing 10th in the UniBond Premier Division with 64 points.

The Club was originally formed back in 1936 by Mr. John Carter and a group of local sporting enthusiasts.

Mr. Carter, who sadly died in 1994 at the ripe old age of 88, was a man who had a dream and he was deservedly recognized by the Football Association in 1986 for his efforts of behalf of Ossett Town AF & Social Club on its 50th Anniversary.

The original ground was at Fern House, and the move to Ingfield was made in 1957 following the sale of Derek Blackburn to Swansea Town for £1350.00 – the transfer fee being used to purchase Ingfield, our current ground. (The original cheque is still proudly displayed in the Club’s Committee Room).

Steady progress by the Club reached fruition in 1998/99 season when they finished second in the North East Counties, Premier Division with 73 points. As Albion failed to meet UniBond League requirements the promotion place was offered to Ossett Town. The first couple of seasons saw us finishing in 8th place.

2001/2002 season saw the Club finish second to Harrogate Town, however, on this occasion it was our turn to fall fowl of ground grading regulations and despite frantic efforts in adverse weather the required improvements were not completed in time.

2003/2004 season saw Town recover from a disappointing start to finish 14th having been bottom for a long period at the start of the season. The turnaround was primarily due to the arrival of Steve Richards and his number two Steve Kittrick.

With the re-structure of the Leagues and the unfortunate problems encountered by Telford United, Town was able to clinch the final place in the new UniBond Premier Division.

2004/2005 saw Town consolidate their position within the UniBond Premier Division finishing 16th with 46 points. This season saw the unfortunate departure of Spennymoor United who had been unable to fulfill several of their fixtures.

2005/2006 saw Town’s League programme interrupted by a good run in the FA Cup only being prevented from progressing to the First Round proper by Leamington who drew Colchester United in the First Round proper and were on the receiving end of a 9 – 1 thrashing.

By Christmas Town’s fortunes changed for the worse and we were way down at the bottom of the table. Steve Richards was replaced by Steve Kittrick, as Caretaker Manager, who in turn gained the support of Andy Hayward, as his Assistant, and true to history the second half of the season saw a remarkable change of fortune, with town finishing the season 11th with 58 points.

Town also finished as runners-up to Blyth Spartans in the Chairman’s Cup Competition following defeat at Blyth Spartans in their May Day encounter

Steve Kittrick more than repaid the Club’s confidence in him as Caretaker Manager and he was confirmed as Manager toward the end of the 2005 / 2006 season.

2006/2007 The 70th Anniversary Season saw many changes to the structure of the team with Steve Kittrick strengthening the squad.

This ultimately led to the team finishing in 10th place in the League with 64 points and with Steve at the helm the Club can now seriously gear up for the coming season and the realistic possibility of attaining a play-off position by the end of the 2007 / 2008 season.

One of the high points of our 70th Anniversary season at Ingfield saw both the FA Cup & FA Youth Cup (Sponsored by E-ON ) making a visit on the night that our Youth Cup team played Spennymoor Town.

Last Season saw many changes at Ingfield, these included the re-introduction of a Reserves Team, which meant that the full structure was once again in place from Junior level right through to the Senior Team.

Several off-the field changes were also made during last season, The continued support of the Business & Retail Community of Ossett, enabled the Club to realistically look forward to developing its on site facilities.

Towards the end of last season Ingfield began to receive the support and investment from new Club President, Simon Turfrey, Managing Director of Ossett Industrial Projects Ltd and The Two Brewers, Queens Drive Ossett.

One of his first actions was to assist in the relocation of seats from the former Doncaster Rovers ground and with his expertise these were transported to Ingfield and refurbished prior to installation in the Prospect Road Stand.
