Prolific marksmen Ryan Strafford continued in the same form as last season with a impressive hat trick with the hard working Lewis Watson netting the 5th.This performance stands the team in good stead for their new life in the Garforth league.
OSSETT TOWN JUNIORS UNDER 13s GARFORTH LEAGUE
Ossett Town under 13s produced a hard working performance in the opening fixture, away at Rothwell Juniors, and were unlucky to slip to a 2 – 0 defeat.
Town dominated the game for long periods, but could not convert the pressure into goals in the first half. Rothwell went ahead early in the second period with a deflected effort, and scored their second soon after. Town gave everything and never let their heads drop, and can take a great deal from this performance.
The player of the match honours could have gone to any member of the squad, but skipper Joe Hitch took the award for a solid performance at the heart of the defence.

Turfrey Hat-Trick as Ossett Metal Turns it Around
The contrast could not have been starker. Rangers matching kit bags providing the backdrop to their intense and elaborate pre-match warm up and the Town boys casually sprawled whilst listening to the motivating words of wisdom from their glorious leader!
If the respective approaches leading up to the game were at the opposite ends of the school of preparation, it mattered little as both teams used the opening whistle as signal to launch into a breath taking and competitive game of football which didn’t let up to the very end.
In a frenetic first few minutes both sides created several chances and Campbell had to pull off a couple of great saves early on to prevent certain early goals from Rangers. At the other end Turfrey was benefitting from some great passing from the Ossett midfield, particularly Spurr on the right, and only some excellent work from the Rangers keeper kept him at bay. Spurr himself also forced a good save after latching onto a superb through ball from Wright.
The work-rate and end-to-end play continued on without any kind of pause and with both teams competing equally, but with Garforth perhaps just slightly getting the better of the play, until on twenty minutes when a sequence of events played out which saw the visitors go 2-0 up in two minutes.
The Garforth main weapon was the long ball over the top and onto the feet of their pacey captain. The Ossett defence had become aware of this threat and had started to play a high line to counter it. On this occasion, the back four weren’t quite in synch and the Garforth captain found himself in acres of space and with an easy finish; a well taken lob over the advancing Campbell.
Garforth’s second goal came quickly after the first and was a Keystone Kops defensive moment. The attack started, inevitably, with a long through ball and which Campbell came out for and forced the attack wide. The resulting shot from the tightest of angles was cleared of the line and there then followed a goal line scramble, with off-the line clearances and acrobatic goalkeeping that lasted for what seemed an eternity. The spectacle was finally brought to a close with a calmly struck shot into the roof of the net. 2-0.
Ossett’s response to this was initially to show signs of a wobble. But it didn’t last long as Turfrey led the way with the grit and determination which both opened Town’s goal account for the season and motivated the rest of the team to claw back the game to victory. As the first half died away, he first forced a truly acrobatic save from Ranger’s excellent keeper, and then fired an unstoppable shot to start the Ossett recovery, this time from the right and on the end of an amazing half-volleyed through ball from Mountain on the half-way line.
The second half belonged to Ossett. The change in formation and line up devised during half time, coupled with some impressive graft and fighting spirit from Spurr, Cundall, Carlos and Daniel in midfield made the difference and won the game. Standing out was Taylor, awarded man of the match for sticking doggedly to his assigned holding role between defence and midfield; this being instrumental to Ossett’s ultimate victory.
The smouldering first –half Turfrey performance ignited into an inferno as he started to bombard the Rangers goal from all over the pitch. Having narrowly missed a chance in the opening seconds, he set up Sykes for Ossett’s equaliser just on five minutes. A typical high, looping, long range shot from Turfrey caught the Rangers keeper off guard and he was forced to parry onto the post and into the predatory feet of Sykes – an easy tap in but a just reward for following up in the first place. 2-2.
Ossett now stepped up a gear and began to test the Garforth defence again and again. Turfrey again came close with two good attempts; the first forcing a good save as he went clean through one on one, and the second an astounding 30 yard looping shot from the left which easily beat the keeper but glanced of the far post. Then it was Taylor, to force another good save as he blasted a Daniel lay-off from the edge of the box.
Garforth weren’t lying down though and Ossett’s back four were needed to deal with their constant threat. Ruane, Mountain, Stead and Wright worked tirelessly to snuff out any Garforth ambitions, and Fox in particular made some crucial, and probably goal saving, tackles.
As twenty minutes arrived, Turfrey was finally rewarded again and scored Ossett’s final two goals in quick sucession. The first came from a lovely flick through from Sykes, who played better and better as the game went on, and which Mr T calmly took in his stride before blasting into the back of the net. The second came as he beat the last man and skilfully picked his spot ahs he ran into the area from the right. 4-2.
A scrappy five minutes ensued as Ossett seemed to take too long to regain their composure and exposed themselves to unnecessary pressure. Ossett finished with a flurry though and came so close to making it five with some classic route one football – a Campbell goal kick out to Sykes, a instinctive flick on to Turfrey and a screamer that went just wide from 25 yards –oooooooohhhh!
A great game and a good start to the season, the result being all the more impressive for Ossett being initially 0-2 down. Good game, good spirit, good result.
OSSETT TOWN UNDER 12’S HUDDERSFILED LEAGUE
SCORERS POTTER, WHITE
Confidence was high as the newly promoted Ossett Town kicked off the new season away at Netherton.
Ossett started to pile on the pressure with good interplay between Awad and Horsefall on the wing and Rogers in the middle , Netherton were finding it hard to keep Ossett from scoring.
The back line of Scott, Sheen, Hobson, and Hall easily dealt with any Netherton attacks.
Another ball threaded through the defense of Netherton lead to a hand ball in the area, Penalty.
Up steps Potter to coolly place the shot in the top left hand corner.
Netherton now started to exert pressure but again the defense stood firm and the keeper Dann looking composed . Ossett also had some good breaks with Waca and Jaz linking up well to try and score the second.
Netherton were now starting to play open football and a great pass over the Ossett back line lead to a three on one situation with the keeper and a good finish.
Ossett now introduced Lonsdale and Carney into the game, and with White now starting to spread the ball wide and with Carney’s pace the balance of play was again with the away team, but were unable to capitalize and at half time the score was even.
The second half saw some more substitutions from Ossett and the match really began to open up and was end to end with both defenses having to work hard, with some crucial tackles by Hobson managing to keep the Netherton attackers at bay.
Again a good over the top ball lead to a brave save by the Town keeper Dann, unfortunately getting the ball in the face and having to be substituted by Rogers.
Netherton now started to play some excellent football, which lead to another breakaway goal, but as usual Town did not let their heads drop and with Carney and White linking up well Town pressed for the Equalizer.
A free kick lead to the home team scoring again, and with two very well worked goals were soon 5-1 in the lead, But with a superb solo effort captain White scored Town’s second.
Netherton were now full of confidence and towards the end of the match scored two quick goals to make the final score 7-2.
This was a good indicator as to the standard of football Ossett will have to expect in this higher division.
All the team worked hard through the match creating chances, but these will have to be converted into goals if we are to make an impression on the other teams in this league.
