This top of the table clash did not live up to expectations. Ossett took only eleven players and after 15 minutes lost their right back to an ankle injury, then after 30 mins had to switch a centre back with a winger due to the defender damaging a knee.
The 9 and a half Ossett Ladies stayed game but the final score of 11-0 to Elland was inevitable.

Ossett Town Under 7's Pumas v Wrenthorpe Rangers.

Ossett Pumas kicked off their season on a lovely sunny morning with a deserved 3-1 victory over a very spirited Wrenthorpe side.  The Puma's containing a number of new faces were first on the attack with Max Wilson making a great run and having the first shot of the game with the Wrenthorpe goalkeeper making a fine save.

Wrenthorpe then attacked well and after a sustained period of pressure and took the lead after 10 minutes of play.  From the kick off a good run from Oliver Spencer resulted in him being tripped and a penalty awarded which was converted by Matthew Rogers.  A second goal soon followed with a fine finish from Scott Rankin.

After a good battle in midfield Ossett attacked again with Scott Rankin starting the move, passing to Matthew Rogers whose shot was saved and it ricocheted to Oliver Spencer who finished it well for Ossett.

Wrenthorpe then had sustained pressure in Ossett's half but Ossett defended superbly with numerous good saves from their second goalkeeper of the game in Ben Fishman.

Wrenthorpe had two debutants in Daniel Clements and Jack Maconachie who both played very well, but Wrenthorpe's Man of the Match was their goalkeeper Harry Brown who was outstanding on the day.

Ossett's new look team were very impressive and all the players did really well, with Man of the Match going to Troy Kimmings who was outstanding in defence.

Saturday 15th September 2007

Ossett Town Under 7's Panthers v Wrenthorpe Rangers.

A spirited Ossett Panthers kicked off their season against a well organised Wrenthorpe Rangers.

Wrenthorpe were on the attack from the kick off and had numerous chances which were blocked by some good defending from Alex Jolly and some fine saves from Goalkeeper Oliver Spencer.  But after 10 minutes the relentless pressure finally told and Wrenthorpe took the lead with a fine shot from Man of the Match George Moodley.  The same player soon made it 2-0 just before half time.  Adam Philips from Wrenthorpe then had a dynamic run down the wing and even had the opportunity to give his coach a cheeky smile.

The second half began and Ossett battled hard with Christian Galdamez having a number of fine runs and Lewis Stephens outstanding in defence.  Alex Jolly also took over the reins in goal for Ossett.

However, it wasn't long before Wrenthorpe made it 3-0.  Ossett then came into the game more and to their credit their heads didn't drop and they kept enthusiastically plugging away but could not break down the Wrenthrope defence.  On 25 minutes George Moodley made it 4-0 and also completed his hat-trick for Wrenthorpe.

The Panthers tried hard and kept their spirits high with Man of the Match going to Christian Galdamez who was outstanding on the day.

Ossett Town U12’s – Garforth League

Menston Juniors 5(2) - Ossett Town 2(2), 16th September 2007. KO 11.00.
Ossett Scorers:  Spurr, Turfrey
Ossett MoM: Turfrey
Hard Work But Nothing to Show at Menston
In the shadow of the Cow and Calf, a beautiful setting on a big, big pitch.  Welcome to Menston Juniors!  With the wind behind them for the first half, Ossett knew that they had seize the initiative and make best of this meteorological advantage.  And seize it they did, with both their goals coming in the first half and each time to take the lead. Man of the match Turfrey, again on top form, created the first and then scored the sublime second.
The first came on ten minutes when Taylor played a neat ball through for Turfrey to run onto and power forward into the Menston half with a big centre half muscling him all the way. In a carbon copy of the previous week he shot early from the left and let loose a high looping shot which totally surprised  the home keeper, and, just as the week before, went over his head and hit the right hand post.  In the Garforth Rangers game it had been Sykes who had been the poacher.  This time it was Spurr, racing in on the rebound and clinically stroking the ball home.
As often seems to be the case, a reply quickly came.  On this occasion from a quick flick through and despite an initial block from Campbell as he raced out to meet the attack, the final shot flew high over his head without much chance for intervention.
Sensing the urgency, Ossett immediately pressed forward and the pressure applied paid off within seconds. A poor kick from the Menston keeper was caught by the wind and fell almost perfectly at the feet of Turfrey in the centre of the pitch, some 25 yards out. In one fluid movement, and without any hesitation he casually half-volleyed a return over the keepers head and into the vacant net. 1-2 to Ossett.
The constant breeze played its part today, but it was not the determining factor.  Menston are a very good side; skillfull, a physical edge, well organised and able to play a good passing game.  Reeling from twice going behind at home, they seemed to get a renewed focus and sense of organisation which was to last for the rest of the half, and indeed the game.   At 2-1 up Ossett should have been bossing the game but the final ten minutes saw them on the back foot and struggling.  The Menston equaliser came from some bad Ossett defending, as they seemed incapable of clearing from one of the many Menston attacks. A serious of missed tackles, scuffed clearances or fresh air swings gave the home side the chance to blast home from inside the box.  And just on half time they nearly nicked the lead as Campbell blocked an initial one-on-one charge with his face and somehow the rebound was steered wide of the gaping net.  A let off and no mistake.
So, the first half finished 2-2.  Even on score and probably on performance also.  Ossett had worked extremely hard and up until the last few minutes, as stamina and concentration waned a little, were more than a match for the home side.
The first five minutes of the second half saw Ossett ominously penned in their own half and the midfield had to work extremely hard to help out the beleaguered defence.  Taylor and Cundall in particular were influential in this respect, chasing and tackling again and again.  Inevitably though, Menston took the lead on 40 minutes with a break down the left and from a cross that initially went too long, but concluded with some tenacious follow up and a clever finish into the top corner. 3-2.
Despite the setback, Ossett continued to work hard and try to set their front men loose again.  But frustratingly, the final ball was persistently absent and Turfrey, who had been a constant threat in the first half, was conspicuous by his lack of attacking involvement in the second.  Town’s chance finally came and went on 55 minutes, as a Spurr throw in from the right found its way untouched through a crowd of players to the lurking Sykes on the six-yard line, only to be hit squarely into the keepers arms.
To prove the point, the home side went on score another two in the last five minutes.  The first came from some more bad defending, with a clearance from the right hand side of the six yard box back across the penalty area.  The second came from nothing – a simple break from the centre, Campbell misjudging his run out to narrow and block and a good chipped finish. 5-2.
Overall, a good Ossett performance against a good Menston side.  The score could have been worse and (ignoring a couple of blips) only some good Town defending and goal saving tackles from Fox and Stead prevented this.  The lack of penetration was more to do with the effective organisation of Menston than any lack of effort from Town and at the end of the day, I guess Menston knew that they had played a hard game.  Another day, on a smaller pitch, with less travelling involved, who knows?  Wait a minute....won’t that be the home fixture?

OSSETT PIPPED BY CLEVER COLLEGIANS

Ossett Town Under 12’s – Huddersfield League

Ossett Town (2) 3       Collegians (3) 4
Scorers: Preston, Ahmed, White
Man of the Match: Dann

16th September 2007

Match Report by Brian Hobson

For the second week in a row, Ossett Town matched their opponents for long periods of the game only to suffer a defeat.

On a sunny blustery morning Town started well and took an early lead with as good a goal as they will score all season. Wonderful inter-passing between Hartshone, Lonsdale and Preston down the left wing lead to Preston getting put through on the keeper and finishing perfectly.

Ossett failed to build on this however, being second to the ball too often and getting caught by 2 breakaways both finished well by Collegians leaving goalkeeper Dann with no chance. When Collegians scrambled home a third after 22 minutes it seemed Ossett might suffer the sort of collapse that happened in last week’s 2nd half. But this week they showed character, and a triple substitution of Ahmed, Hobson and Horsfall paid off when they narrowed the deficit before half time with an excellent Ahmed shot from 20 yards.

The second half was even with both teams aware that the next goal would be crucial. With Carney playing a sweeper role behind the ever-reliable Sheen, Ossett were less vulnerable to the long ball, allowing the full backs of Hobson and Hall / Scott to play some good passes forward. Despite good battling in midfield from Lonsdale, White and Potter, chances for Rogers and Preston up front were at a premium.

10 minutes from time a brilliant run by Hartshone took him past 3 defenders, but the Town forwards were unable to force his cross home. Town were made to pay when Collegians netted a 4th 2 minutes from time, and though White pulled one back with a free-kick from 25 yards in injury time, it was too late to save the game.

Plenty of positives to take from this game – we kept our heads up even when behind, looked tighter at the back in the 2nd half, and unlike last week we looked the fitter side the longer the game went on. Hard work in training seems to be paying off, and if we keep playing football the way we are results will come.

CHARLES RICE JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE U16’s PREMIER DIVISION

ALTOFTS JUNIORS v OSSETT TOWN REDS
Date: 16th September 2007  Kick Off: - 2:30 p.m.

Following promotion from the Challenge Division last season as runners up to Altofts Juniors, the fixture list meant that Ossett had to visit Altofts for their first match in the higher level.

Ossett arguably had the better of the game in terms of possession and chances but ended up losing out by 3 – 1 as Altofts were able to deal better with a very strong wind blowing the length of the pitch.

After winning the toss Altofts elected to play with the wind behind them in the first half and took an early lead after 5 minutes when a looping cross from the bye line somehow dropped over the stretching Carl Widdrington into the Ossett goal.

Ossett responded well after the goal and had some good spells of possession and at times passed the ball well and it was at the end of one of these moves that Ross Hardaker almost equalized, only to see his diving header cleared off the line.

Hardaker came close again after 32 minutes after he received the ball on the edge of the box, this time he saw his left foot shot saved well by the Altofts goalkeeper low down to his right.

Altofts increased their lead just before half time when a low cross was scrambled over the line as striker, defender and goalkeeper all came together at the same time.

Half Time: - Altofts Juniors 2 v Ossett Town Reds 0

Ossett, playing with the wind in the second half, dominated possession and Altofts were left to play on the break, however having won a corner they scored a third goal after 46 minutes.  Ossett seemed to have dealt with the first ball in but Altofts won it back in left midfield and delivered back into the box where their loose striker was able to turn the ball in unchallenged.

Ossett created a number of good opportunities with Josh Ellis coming closest and speculative efforts from distance from Phil Williams and Ellis going wide, but it took until the 74th minute before they eventually found a goal.  Having won a free kick wide on the right, Ross Hardaker curled in a great ball into the box for Ben Njie to head home.

Boosted by the goal Ossett finished strongly and two minutes later Hussam Atif found himself through on goal, unfortunately he couldn’t steer his shot on target as the Altofts keeper advanced.

Two further half chances fell to Ross Hardaker in the dying minutes, both from low crosses along the six yard line where the defenders just did enough to prevent Hardaker making clean contact on the ball.

OSSETT TOWN JUNIORS UNDER 13s GARFORTH LEAGUE

Ossett Town under 13s deserved a hard fought 1 – 0 victory over Colton, at a blustery Spring Mill. Jake Irvine produced a delicate finish to score the only goal of the game early in the second half.

Once again the overall team performance was Town’s strength, but player of the match honours went to Harry Townend for a tireless performance up front.
