22nd & 23rd September 2007

Ossett Town Under 7's Panthers v Pontefract St Josephs
Saturday 22nd September 2007

A brilliant team performance by a much improved Panthers side saw them lose 2-1 with the last kick of the game.

Ewan Broadbent start in goal for Ossett and made some fine saves. Ossett attacked well with Christian Galdamez and Thomas Wright up front and both had chances which were well saved .

Jacob Merricks, Lewis Stephens, Jacob Nash and Kieran Stephenson were superb in defence and showed some real grit and determination for their team.  Jamie White and Lewis Stephen made some excellent runs through midfield and never stopped battling.  It was a very entertaining end to end game, with a great team effort from both sides with the defences on top which to their credit resulted in the half time score being 0 - 0.

Second half George Ladley went in goal for Ossett and Pontefract started the second half on the attack and took the lead with a fine shot.  Ossett attacked well and kept their spirits high and a great run into the box resulted in Jamie White being tripped resulting in a penatly for Ossett, which Lewis Stephens confidently converted to level the scores 1-1.

Unfortunately for Ossett Christian Gladamez sustained a foot injury and had to be substituted.  Alex Jolly went up front and battled well for Ossett and had a shot just wide.  Pontefract then attacked well and with the last shot of the game scored to make the final result 2 - 1.

It was a great team effort from the Panthers, every player gave 100%.  Man of the Match went to Lewis Stephens who was excellent.

Ossett Town Under 7's Pumas v Pontefract St Josephs.
Saturday 22nd September 2007
Ossett Pumas kicked off today's game on yet another lovely sunny morning.

Debutant for Ossett was Dan Fletcher who had an outstanding game in defence overcoming an early injury to his hand.  Joe McDaid started in goal for Ossett.

Ossett had the early pressure with Matthew Rogers having the first shot of the game which was well saved.  Straight after Pontefract attacked well and came close to taking the lead but their shot hit the post.

Pontefract had a good period of pressure, but Ossett's defence was outstanding with Troy Kimmings, William Hall, Scott Rankin and Dan Fletcher holding the line superbly.  Marshall Boden battled well and put in some great tackles.

Just before half time Oliver Spencer made a great solo run from midfield into the box and scored to put Ossett 1 - 0 up and he celebrated with a spectacular cartwheel.

Start of the second half and Pontefract attacked well and made the score 1 - 1.  Ossett then needed some last ditch defending from Max Wilson to stop a certain Pontefract goal.

Ossett played some superb team football and it really was a pleasure to watch.  The game was end to end but Pontefract had another chance which they finished well to take the lead 2 - 1.  Ossett's heads didn't go down and a great run from Max Wilson who passed to Troy Kimmings, then to Ben Fishman who instinctively had a left foot shot from outside the box which had the keeper beaten but went agonisingly wide.  Various other shots from Max Wilson, Matthew Rogers and Ben Fishman were saved well and Pontefracts defence would not be broken down.

Ossett were very impressive and played well as a team with some super passing, all the players did really well, with Man of the Match going to Scott Rankin who was outstanding on the day.

Tingley vs Ossett Town
23/9/07

The Lions

“Nice faux leopard skin mate. Grrr.”

Tingley1 - Lions 10

At times a purring performance saw the Lions run away with this start of term match, in that piece of land that is forever Finney’s corner. Liam Finney lived up to the billing providing some great incisive runs, passes and opening up the scoring with a characteristic goal. Liam was ably aided up front by Thomas McGee who wreaked havoc in the Tingley defence. Everyone was hitting “90 yarders” as the Lions took advantage of the wind. The Lions were clearly on top; so much so that the Tingley goal was nearly shattered into a thousand pieces. Thomas McGee let fly with two powerful shots, which could not be stopped and were last seen by locals in Burmantofts.

Tingley did manage to break out, but the defensive performance of Liam Taylor, left off where it ended last season, and was very good indeed. There was good communication between our outstanding keeper, Ella Walker, and Liam Taylor which gave the Lions a solid platform to work from. Ella, when required, came out to clear and showed excellent decision-making.

Thomas Coe has not lost any of his dancing skills and skipped through a couple of lovely shimmies to set up attacks. Elliot Hewitt linked well with Thomas Coe, and was unlucky not to have netted more of his chances. Elliot once again showed intelligent play and a natural foot balling brain. He was able to have a hand in most of the best episodes of play.

Elliot and Geraint Evans controlled the midfield well and the long shot god was smiling on Geraint who managed to bag two from outside the area.

The match was already won by half time as the Lions turned round 6-0 up. However, that eighth man, the wind, played games with the Lions’ defence bouncing the ball into the net. It was not going to be so easy this half. Liam Taylor, in goals, saw his confidence grow in his ability as a keeper and pulled off some fantastic saves.

Thomas McGee and Ella Walker made a fine centre back pairing and their clearances were often good passes. One pass from TJ found Liam Finney who managed to put Elliot Hewitt through on goal. Elliot took his chance with aplomb.

Though the Lions had to do much more defending this half, an own goal and two more from Geraint brought the half total to 4.

A souped up performance, the foot on the gas, and all we need now is the faux leopard skin seat covers to help us make the journey that is this season.

Tingley vs Ossett Town
23/9/07
The Tigers“Seesaw”
Tingley 6 Tigers 4

A match that see-sawed as the Tigers came from behind to take the lead and then suffer the effects of the wind and chaotic play, only to finish two down but the stronger of the two sides.

Three newcomers into the Tigers team made successful debuts. Louis Allison, gave a man of the match performance, in stoic and clever defensive work. He was the bedrock of the team. Joseph Smith, made his debut as goalie, and not only managed to put together some excellent saves, he scored. Morgan Fletcher played up front and laid on two passes for Finlay Townend to get a brace of goals.

Ryan Turfrey also had an outstanding match as he provided the attacking drive for the Ossett renaissance in the second half. He was like the secret ingredient in TNT.

The first half started badly for Ossett going one nil down quickly. However, Tigers rallied and turned round 2-1 up. Connor Ryan went close on several occasions, but the goal would just not come. It was Ryan Turfrey who opened the scoring for Ossett, followed by Joseph Smith who scored from his goalkeeping position. Lloyd Rodgers put together a couple of useful moves in his midfield role.

The Tigers seemed to be caught napping in the second half and it looked like a true rout was going to be witnessed. Liam Hitchcock, in goals, kept a smile and his performance grew as the half went on, resulting in a couple of vital saves. His size helped as the high shots were tipped over the bar. The game looked over for the Tigers as they took a bashing. However, the return of Ryan led to the Ossett breakout. Morgan Fletcher, chased all the balls and eventually his efforts paid off with two passes to Finlay.

Finlay has an excellent finish on him. He took his chances well and Tigers were back in the game.

This was a good first outing for the Tigers. The seeds of a strong team are there and congratulations to all the debutantes.

Under 10’s
Sun 23 Sep

Ossett Town U10's played a friendly away at Hunslet, playing on astro turf for the first time, and also playing three 15 minute periods in each game, giving unusual circumstances for the players.

The Terriers produced their best performance of the pre-season, dominating from the first minute to the last. On the small pitch they produced some good link up play and had plenty of shots. The game finished 7-1, with the goals coming from all areas of the picth with 5 different scorers - Connor Rigg, Will Pollitt, Danny Bell, Danny Heyward and James Bree scoring with his first touch on his debut. The DJH man of the match was Danny Bell for a strong defensive display, topped only by his goal from long range.

A similar story for the Tigers who continued their good pre-season form, eventually winning 9-1. The goals were evenly spread through the game as the Tigers dominated in all areas, with the defence having little to do for long periods. The goals were scored by Tom Wilson, Harry Walls, Rowan Naylor-Myers, Frazer Ellis, James Bree and a thunderbolt free-kick from Jack Harrop. A couple of own goals from Hunslet were also scored from good Tigers pressure. The ASD man of the match was Rowan Naylor-Myers for good team play, a number of assists and a goal with the last kick of the game.

OSSETT TOWN UNDER 12’S – HUDDERSFIELD LEAGUE

Sunday 23rd September 2007

GOMERS take ALL 3 points

OSSETT TOWN (0) 2 GOMERSALL (4) 4

SCORERS: Horsfall, Carney

PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Preston

This 12 o’clock kick off away at Gomersal saw Ossett town start very lively with a back four of Hall, Sheen, Carney, and Hartshorne, a midfield of White, Potter, Ahmed and Horsfall, and a forward line of Awad and Preston easily in control and keeper Dann having very little to do.

With the narrow pitch and the blustery conditions both teams were finding it hard to make any space.

Horsfall on the left and Wakka in attack had some good early touches creating some good breaks, and when Gomersal tried to get into the Ossett half of the field captain White and centre backs Sheen and Carney were on hand to mop up and to launch counter attacks.

A good early shot by Preston needed a good save by the Gomersal Keeper.

But in this higher league you have to take your chances, and on the first real attack by Gomersal a touch of class from the winger led to a shot in the bottom corner leaving Dann no chance.

As usual Ossett did not let their heads go down but the opposition’s defense were now organised and their midfield were starting to gain confidence.

A great strike from outside of the area led to Gomersal’s second.

Ossett now made some substitutions bringing on Lonsdale, Hobson and Briggs.

Gomersal were now piling on the pressure and a good save from keeper Dann kept the score at two.

Ossett now counter attacked and Briggs was brought down in the box, penalty.

Up stepped Potter only to see his shot well saved.

But as half time approached Gomersal scored two more goals to make the score 4-0

The second half saw a rejuvenated Ossett town take to the field and with the extra pace of Carney up front Town were soon on the score sheet.

White now was able to move up front and only a great save stopped him scoring.

An injury to keeper Dann saw him brought off and Hall taking his place.

Town’s confidence was now much better and with Horsfall's determination on the wing he soon found space to score a great goal.

Ossett now tried to salvage the game with some great passing and link up play from the midfield and the pace of Carney and Preston Town were unfortunate not to find the net.

A breakaway from Gomersal saw the pacey winger brought down in the box, but a great save from keeper Hall prevented the resulting penalty from being scored.

Time now ran out and the final score was 4-2

Today’s performance showed that we can compete with the best in this higher division.

We only have to keep our shape and concentration for all of the game and we will soon start to pick up points.

Keep it going Boys.

OSSETT TOWN JUNIORS UNDER 13S GARFORTH LEAGUE

Ossett Town under 13s produced a below par performance to loose 4 – 1 to Queensbury. Town went behind midway through the first half to a penalty, but hit back immediately with a well taken goal from Tom Smith.

The second period saw Ossett loose their way and conceeded a further three goals without reply. Player of the match honours went to Tom Smith for a good all round display.

CHARLES RICE JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE U16’s
PREMIER DIVISION

ATHERSLEY REC v OSSETT TOWN REDS

Date: - 23rd September 2007 Kick Off: - 2:00pm

In their second league game of the season Ossett Town Reds were beaten by 5 – 3 in an away game at Athersley Rec. Athersley made a fast aggressive start to the game and it took Ossett more than 10 minutes to get a foot hold in the game, however by this stage they had already conceded two goals.

Athersley took the lead in the 2nd minute from a corner, the ball was delivered with pace and curl which the Ossett defence couldn’t deal with and it was left to an Athersley player to head in from close range.

Ossett suffered a further set back after 8 minutes when an excellent Athersley shot from outside the box found the back of the net via the finger tips of goalkeeper Carl Widdrington and the inside of the post.

Having started to establish themselves in the game Ossett were given a chance to pull a goal back after 16 minutes. Ben Njie was pulled down in the penalty area, however Phil Williams saw his well struck spot kick hit the inside of the post and rebound straight into the arms of the diving Athersley goalkeeper. Two minutes later Ossett did pull a goal back when Ben Njie scored a goal that came from a breakaway following an Athersley corner.

Half Time: - Athersley Rec 2 v Ossett Town Reds 1

Having made a bright start to the second half Ossett then fell further behind after 45 minutes. Having given away a free kick on the left side of midfield, the quality of the ball into the box was, again, to good for the defence and another Athersley header found its way into the net.

Ossett responded immediately when Ross Hardaker headed home a Michael Liversidge left foot cross just 1 minute later.

Ossett then enjoyed their best spell of the game. Both Phil Williams and Joe Madarasi came close to the equalizer before Hardaker scored again after 61 minutes when he chipped the Athersley keeper running on to a ball over the top of the defence.

Having pulled level Ossett looked like they could go on and win the game but after 79 minutes fell behind again. Athersley played the ball over the top of the Ossett defence, running back towards his own goal and challenging for the ball with the Athersley player Phil Williams unfortunately saw his attempted clearance loop up over the top of the advancing goalkeeper and drop into the net.

Athersley put the result beyond doubt with 1 minute of normal time remaining with another excellent strike from the edge of the area, which left Ossett keeper Carl Widdrington with no chance.

Full Time: - Athersley Rec 5 v Ossett Town Reds 3

Man of the match for Ossett Town: - Ben Njie & Michael Liversidge

Goal scorers for Ossett Town: - Ben Njie, Ross Hardaker(2)

Ossett Town Whites V Sherburn WR 23/09/07 - Under 16s

Ossett entertained Sherburn White Rose, and kept up their rich vein of form after beating local rivals Thornes 7-0 the previous week. Ossett dominated for long periods of the game with captain Luke Thompson instrumental in most of the ossett moves, quick pass and move football saw Ossett cruise to a 5 - 0 win with goals from Sean Lawson 2, Lee Schofield 2 and Matty Kavanagh 1. The REMGOLD player of the match was awarded to Captain Luke Thompson.

OSSETT LADIES

It was a question of numbers for Ossett again this week. Eleven started and were 3-1 up at half time. Down to 9 with half an hour to go and it ends up 3-8. The madness was that Ossett's 9, once they started to believe in themselves, controlled the game for the last 10 mins of the game despite some good football from Royd.

Pattersons Opticians Player of the Match was Sarah Law.
