27th & 28th October 2007
Ossett Ladies
Town and Republica games are always closely fought and when they met on Sunday 28th to compete for a place in the quarter finals it proved no different.
Town kicked off in their change green and were given a quick wake up call. Republica's quick left winger completely undid Sarah Law at right back to cross for an easy stab in by their centre forward - 4 mins gone and Town are one down!
Town then got into the game and pressure by Vicky Saul forced a corner which she took herself, a low outswinger that Gemma Howell met sweetly to volley home from 10 yards. 16 mins 1-1.
It stayed pretty even until after 32 mins Sophie Morrison made a telling through ball for Gemma to run onto and beat the keeper with a low shot to the corner. 32 mins 1-2.
Sarah Law has a throw that many men players would envy and on 43 mins she landed one at Becky Woods feet on the 6 yard box. Becky beat three defenders with clever side steps, faked a shot to commit the keeper to a dive the wrong way and then coolly hit the back of the net. 43 mins 1-3
If only they could keep their heads! Republica test the line at every set piece and with a free kick on the stroke of half time they undid the back four (who were all stood arms in the arm in Arsenal fashion) to allow their right wing to net from close in.
Half Time Republica 2 Ossett Town 3
The second half was even, chances fell to Vicky Saul, Sophie Morrison and Gemma Howell. Gemma at one point beat four players and if she'd gone down instead of battling on may have won a penalty but no further score for Town. Republica continued to beat the Town offside trap and each of the back four had to make solo runs to steal the ball at the last minute. Then disaster.......... a Republica corner didn't get cleared and bounced around, it hit a hand, ball to hand or vice versa but who cares, the man in black said "penalty" and Republica's striker duly converted.
Full Time Republica 3 Ossett Town 3
Hearts in mouths for all of the first period of extra time, Vicky shot narrowly wide and hit a volley over the bar but no change in the score.
Second period and we're all dreading penalties, only 4 mins left, but then something special, no, magical happened. Gemma Howell picked up the ball ten yards inside her own half, peeled out to the left, beat two midfield players and the full back, entered the area, held off a centre back and then smashed the ball low past the keeper. Ossett are in front!
They say attack is the best form of defence and Town showed it to be true, Vicky battled down the left wing, the ball bounced around from the cross and landed outside the box. Jodie Selby came screaming in from left back, took one touch and then placed the ball past the keepers outstretched fingers and onto, then in-off the post. The ref blew from the kick off and town had won!

Patterson's Opticians player of the match was Gemma Howell and special mentions to Sophie Morrison (the other half of the hard working midfield duo) and Jodie Selby.

CHARLES RICE JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE U16’s
PREMIER DIVISION
Ossett Town Reds continue to find life tough in the Premier Division and are still looking for their first points of the season after losing their third league game in a row, going down by 4 – 1 at home to Houghton Main.
In fairness the 4 – 1 score line did not show a true reflection of the game and Ossett did in fact play some good football. For long periods the two teams were fairly evenly matched and but for a poor 5 minutes just before half time when Ossett conceded two soft goals, the score would have been much closer.
Houghton took the lead after 13 minutes when, after an initial shot had been well saved by Ossett goalkeeper Carl Widdrington, the rebound fell to a Houghton player who returned it into the net.
Ossett should have equalized 3 minutes later when Ross Hardaker found himself unmarked at the far post from Scott Archer’s free kick, unfortunately Hardaker didn’t make solid contact with his header and the ball went wide.
After 23 minutes Josh Ellis was denied a goal for Ossett after a fine piece of individual play. Having collected the ball just inside the Houghton half he then beat a number of players before unleashing a left foot shot from the edge of the box, which the keeper did well to save.
Houghton then scored two quick goals in a period that keeper Carl Widdrington will want to forget. After 25 minutes a long ball up field from the Houghton keeper was allowed to fall to one of their players who produced a shot across goal, it looked like Widdrington would gather, falling to his right, but the ball came loose and was bundled in. Five minutes later the unfortunate Widdrington had another disaster when he tried to collect the ball from a corner but dropped it, allowing a Houghton player to score.
Half Time: - Ossett Town Reds 0 v Houghton Main 3
Ossett made a good start to the second half and had almost pulled a goal back after 46 minutes through a chance that again fell to Ross Hardaker. However they then fell further behind after 52 minutes when Houghton were awarded a penalty following a Shaun Joy challenge on the edge of the box.
Despite being four goals down Ossett continued to press for a goal but found it difficult to force any clear-cut chances, shots from Joe Madarasi and Shaun Joy being their best efforts. Houghton looked to extend the lead and almost caught Ossett on the break and but for excellent covering defending from Josh Hardy and Rhys Wilkinson would have scored again.
Ossett did eventually score when Joe Madarasi worked the ball out to the left of the Houghton penalty area where Ross Hardaker, in acres of space, took the ball on to score, but with only 5 minutes left it was to late to influence the result.

BATTYEFORD TAKE THE SPOILS IN SEE-SAW GAME
Match Report by Brian Hobson
Ossett were unlucky not to build on last week’s victory by earning a point in an entertaining game against a good Battyeford side.
With the earlier rain clearing up and on a perfect surface Town started brightly, with the midfield of Ahmed, Lonsdale, White and Horsfall working hard and closing the opposition down well. After almost forcing an own goal early on, they took a deserved lead after 10 minutes. Goal poacher Rogers turned provider this time, slipping a pass through to set Liam Preston away to finish with confidence.
Battyeford responded well to this set back, however, and despite good work by the back 4 of Martin Preston, Awad, Sheen and Scott the visitors equalised on 16 minutes with a very well taken goal. 6 minutes later came a pivotal moment in the match. An excellent passing move from Ossett out of defence eventually led to nothing, and Battyeford went straight down the other end and took the lead.
Ossett were rocking for a few minutes as Battyeford threatened a third, but buoyed by a double substitution of Hartshorne up front and Potter in midfield they levelled the match just before half time. A good Potter cross from the right was cleared to Sheen just outside the area, and his half volley arrowed into the bottom corner. He struck it so sweetly, he turned away celebrating the goal as soon as the ball left his boot!
Hobson came on at half time and slotted into full back, and had to be at his best as both teams went for the win. After Ossett keeper Hall did well to force the Battyeford striker to fire wide when put through one on one, Horsfall was unlucky to see his effort deflected just wide from a similar position.
However on 37 minutes it was the visitors who took the lead from another break down the middle. The remainder of the second half was even; both teams played good football and created chances, only to be foiled by some excellent defending at both ends, and ultimately Ossett ran out of time in their search for an equaliser.
This was another good performance from Town. After beating a team near the bottom of the table last week, they held their own against a team near the top and could easily have got the point they deserved. It was an enjoyable match with both teams looking to play football the right way, and against a team playing in Division 1 last season Ossett showed how much they have improved since the start of the season. If we keep playing the same way whoever the opposition is there will be plenty more wins before the end of the season.
Ossett Town – Under 16’s Whites
Ossett entertained Mexborough mainstreet, and were soon in control with two fantastic strikes from in form Joe Walton, mexborough came back into the game and were unlucky not to pull one back but Brad Thompson on the break with great work from Lee Schofield made it 3 - 0, mexborough pushed hard and were rewarded with a goal after a mix up in the Ossett defence, Brad Thompson came to the rescue again after skillfull Jamie Eyles was brought down for a penalty to make it 4-1. A well drilled and strong mexborough threw everything at Ossett and scored 2 goals to make it 4-3, with 5 minutes to go, Thompson once again after being set up by Matti Kavanagh scored the decisive 5th goal, for his hat trick. The REMGOLD player of the match was shared between two workhorses Joe Walton and centre half David Newell final score 5-3
A miserable Winter's morning saw a very close game between two good sides.
Troy Kimmings played the whole game in goal for the Pumas, with Marshall Boden, Joe McDaid, Dan Fletcher and Scott Rankin in defence.
The Pumas attacked well from the start with Matthew Rogers having the first shot of the game which went just wide. The Pumas played some lovely football in midfield with William Hall, Max Wilson and Matthew Rogers all linking up well. Up front saw Oliver Spencer and Ben Fishman running hard for the Pumas cause.
Marshall Boden had a cheeky shot from the half way line which had to be saved well by the Gildersome keeper. The Pumas kept the pressure on and a lovely move resulted in a fine shot from Oliver Spencer which was well saved but Matthew Rogers was on hand to finish it superbly for the Pumas.
The Pumas had their tails up and a great run from Max Wilson saw his goalbound shot well saved by the Gildersome keeper and his follow up going agonisingly wide for the Pumas.
Half time saw the score 1-0 to the Pumas.
Start of the second half and Gildersome were awarded a free kick just outside the box, which they converted to level the score 1-1. It really was end to end football. However, Gildersome attacked well again and Troy Kimmings was beaten by a fine shot to make the final score 2-1 to Gildersome on the day.
The Pumas kept battling and they showed some great team spirit once again. For the second week running they were unfortunate to lose by the odd goal. The Pumas need to keep their heads up and keep the great team football and I feel sure that they will get their just rewards very soon.
Marshall Boden was deservedly awarded the Pumas Man of the Match with a solid performance in defence and also some good runs from the back.
A rainy Winter's morning saw the Panthers battle well as a team.
Ewan Broadbent was in goal, with Lewis Stephens, Kieran Stephenson, Harry Graves and Alex Jolly in defence. The Panthers attacked well from the kick off and were awarded an early free kick which Lewis Stephens took. Another Panthers attack saw a fine shot from Thomas Wright well saved and they were unlucky not to be on the score sheet early on in the game.
There was some fine passing from Jamie White, Christian Gladamez and Jacob Nash and the Panthers really were attacking well.
Gildersome then came into the the game and took a 1-0 lead with a fine shot, which was soon to become 2-0 just before half-time. However the Panthers kept attacking and a fine effort from Alex Jolly was well saved by the Gildersome keeper. The half-time score was 2-0 to Gildersome.
Start of the second half saw Lewis Wardman, Jacob Merricks and Jamie White all making good runs and passing well between them. Jamie White came close again to put the Panthers on the score sheet but the Gildersome Goalkeeper saved well.
Gildersome extended their lead to 3-0 soon after half time and straight from the re-start they added a fourth goal. The Panthers kept together as a team and defended well with Kieran Stephenson, Lewis Stephens and Alex Jolly all battling their socks off in defence but Gildersome broke down the defence with a quick succession of goals to make the final score 7-0.
Man of the Match Alex Jolly was all over the pitch for the Panthers and was excellent on the day.

Ossett Undone By Farsley (Again)
This was a game in which Ossett started well but which saw their performance slowly deteriorate as the game progressed to its unnecessarily forgone conclusion. You would have thought that with their third meeting with Farsley in as many weeks they would at least have the measure of their competent, but not spectacular, opposition, particularly after last week’s heroic display away. But this wasn’t evident, and as they let the visitors pass and play, they resorted to panic and scramble for the majority of the match.
For the first ten minutes, the game was actually quite even as both sides competed well but saw nothing to show at the end some good build up play. It looked like Taylor was being put to good effect, holding the ball up in the centre and laying it off to the wingers as they caught up. And in fact Ossett came closest to scoring first; from a corner which lolloped temptingly across the six yard box and then was half-volleyed just wide by Turfrey as he followed his own kick into the box. But that was as close as Ossett came to scoring in the first half as Farsely, slowly and mechanically, started to turn the screw.
Ossett went down 0-1 on 24 minutes from a Farsley break down the right and with the charge of the light brigade providing back up down the centre. The cross into the penalty area found the first Farsley attacker in the waiting queue and he hit one expertly into the roof of the net, just beyond the reach of Campbell at full stretch.
Man of the match went to Campbell again today, and as the first half came to a close he pulled off the first of the bag full of impressive saves which, right to the end , stopped the Farsley rout and always kept Ossett in with a chance of coming back. This one was lightning dive to his right to stop a certain goal, seemingly plucking the ball one handed out the air and keeping hold of it.
Farsley went 0-2 up 10 minutes into the second half, but not before Campbell had pulled off another impressive save, this time vertically at full stretch at the near post, and again keeping hold of the ball with just his finger tips. The goal came again from down the right, this time the cut back cross fooled, except the waiting Farsley attack. 0-2.
Campbell prevented a third certain goal by cleverly coming out at the right time and taking the ball full blast in his stomach, before the third actually did materialise a few minutes later from a 20 yard free kick which sailed goalbound watched by the spectating Ossett team.
Farsley were now running Ossett ragged and frustration began to show as Ruane picked up a yellow card for not inconspicuous shirt pull. A late glimmer of hope came on 28 minutes with a well taken goal from Cundall, cutting from left to right across the edge of the box and firing just inside the right hand post. But it was a false dawn and turned out to be a single consolatory effort.
At the end Farsley finished of proceedings by making it 1-4, again from an orderly queue waiting in the penalty area.
Not Ossett’s best performance by any measure.
