Panal Ash took a three goal lead in the first ten minutes, and Town never recovered, although they fought hard in the second half to hold very strong opposition. Aaron Jones took the player of the match award, for a battling performance in the centre of midfield.

Ossett Scorers: Daniel, Carlos, Turfrey
Ossett MoM: Daniel
Scrappy Ossett Nick A Point
If Ossett had played the whole game like they played the last fifteen minutes they would surely have come away with all three points. As it was, they will consider themselves lucky to get anything from what was a frustrating and overall lacklustre performance, and which Rothwell will no doubt feel aggrieved to have not fully punished.
A perfect day for football. The sun was shining, the ever-present wind which seems to attend home fixtures was absent, the ground was firm but not hard. A relaxed atmosphere purveyed as the game effortlessly rolled into action. What followed from Ossett was awful. Second to every ball, little or no challenge, indecision, lack of communication, ineffective in midfield and a non-presence up front. Panic ensued amongst the Town players as the visitors set out their intentions with determination from the first kick.
Within seconds, Campbell had to make a good save from a fast and fluid Rothwell attack and then on ten minutes Ossett were one goal down from an expertly taken strike, which was unstoppable. A simple, but perfectly weighted ball over the Ossett defence had put the pacey Rothwell no.14 through, but placed finish into the top right hand corner over the advancing Campbell was pure class. 0-1.
Ossett continued their unsure and unsteady plod through the first half for another five minutes, until, against all the odds they pulled back equaliser. If Rothwell’s opener was an example expert finishing, Ossett’s reply was at the other end of the scale and achieved through pure determination from man of the match Daniel. Picking up a long ball from Wright, he tackled and re-tackled his way to the six yard box before finally flicking home and levelling the score.
The Rothwell response was immediate and continued for the remainder of the half. Straight away, Ossett were on the back foot and only a great recovering tackle from Wright, cutting across the whole pitch from right to left, saved Ossett from another certain goal bound shot. And seconds later Campbell had to pull off an acrobatic fingertip save to guide another certain goal wide of the post.
Rothwell finally scored their inevitable second right on half time after a solid five minutes of scrappy pinball football in midfield, and with another excellent finish from their no. 14. Again, a perfectly weighted pass fell to his feet on the penalty spot was the starting point. This time he flicked the ball into the top corner in one fluid movement and without any chance of it being stopped. The whistle went for half time and Ossett went off 1-2 down for a no doubt serious conversation with their manager.
If there had been any half time hair-dryer treatment, it didn’t work, or not immediately at least. In the thirty-first minute Rothwell extended their lead to 1-3 as Ossett failed to clear properly and allowed an easy finish from close range.
At this point, two things happened. Firstly, Rothwell, probably sensing an easy route to victory, seemed to back off a little bit. Secondly, Ossett finally started to get their act together and start playing to somewhere near the high standard they are capable off. The first sign of a turning point was Cundall unleashing Turfrey down the left with a good through ball, but the resultant typically Turfey-esque long range shot which followed could only go agonisingly close to the wrong side of the crossbar.
Next it was Carlos’ turn to bludgeon his way through the Rothwell defence to pull one back for Ossett. Following onto a great ball through from a composed Taylor in midfield, he and Daniel together battered their way through the Rothwell bodies before finally unleashing a deft chip into the vacant space over the goal line, 2-3 and fifteen minutes to go.
Rothwell appeared flummoxed and Ossett’s increasing confidence soon reaped further reward. The midfield not only started to make challenges, but started to win them and Ossett’s equaliser came from this and another fantastic pass through from Taylor to Turfrey. The ball was good but Turfrey still had a lot to do. Power and strength saw him shrug of the initial tackle and his pace then saw him run through unchallenged toward the waiting Rothwell goal. Finally, good old know-how let him calmly pick his spot over the keepers head and blast the ball toward it. A good, well-taken goal which brought Ossett back into the game.
Rothwell sensing the game was escaping them, hit the panic button and tried in vain to re-take the lead. Ossett had “got out of bed” and were now a match for them. Campbell kept them in it on fifty minutes with a brave dive at attacking feet. In fact, at the death, the headline “Daylight Robbery” was all teed up go, as Turfrey’s 25 yard free kick from wide on the right looped in untouched by attack or defence to graze the outside of the far post.
The game finished 3-3. A remarkable example of how to get something out of nothing and how not to keep your lead. On performance, probably a point gained for Ossett and two lost for Rothwell.
Ossett Town Reds progressed into the second round of the Invitation Cup with a comfortable 4 – 1 victory at home to Trophy Division team Garforth Villa. Ossett totally dominated the game and the margin of victory could have been greater had they converted more of the chances that they created.
Much of the game was played in the Garforth half of the pitch with Ossett on top from the outset. Early chances fell to Carl Thompson, Ben Njie and Josh Ellis but it took until the 23rd minute before Ossett broke the deadlock with a goal from Ross Hardaker who headed in Ashley Grint’s right wing cross. Hardaker almost increased the lead after 31 minutes as he latched onto a through ball but he was unable to place the ball past the Garforth goalkeeper.
5 minutes before half time Garforth scored a shock equalizer. Having won a free kick just inside their own half, a long punt forward was initially headed out by Ossett. Garforth picked up the loose ball in midfield and created an opening for a shot at goal. Ossett keeper Carl Widdrington looked to have the ball covered diving low to his right, but the ball bobbled awkwardly in front of him and found its way into the net.
Half Time: - Ossett Town Reds 1 v Garforth Villa 1
Ossett continued to dominate in the second half but again despite creating a number of openings it took some time to find a goal.
After 58 minutes it was Ross Hardaker on target again with a real route one goal. Ossett goalkeeper Carl Widdrington cleared the ball up field and the next player to touch the ball was Hardaker as he struck a left foot shot passed the Garforth keeper from a tight angle.
Two minutes later Ossett killed the game off with a third goal, Georgie Tate should have scored with a free header from Ashley Grint’s corner but having not made good contact the ball fell to Luke Newsome after a scramble and he was able to force it over the line.
Ossett scored a fourth goal after 69 minutes, this time Georgie Tate was the scorer as he headed home a Shaun Joy corner.

Under 10’s
Ossett Town finally got their League season under way with two highly competetive games away at Gildersome.
The Terriers came out 4-3 winners in a thrilling game. In a tight first half chances were at a premium but Gildersome took one of their few chances to lead at half-time. The Terriers came out in the second half strongly and ruthlessly finished three chances in a short space of time, with James Bree grabbing the equaliser and before a brace from Danny Heyward, giving a 3-1 lead. Gildersome closed the gap with a penalty, before James Bree sealed the win with his second goal. Back came Gildersome again with their third of the game. but after a short break to mend a broken cross bar the Terriers held on for a deserved victory. Throughout the game there was great effort and collective defending, with the DJH man of the match going to defender Danny Bell.
The Tigers were also involved in an exciting game, although they started the game slowly and were soon trailing 1-0. Gildersome spurned some chances before the Tigers really got involved, but towards half-time it had become an even game with chances missed on both sides. The Tigers were more dominant at the start of the second half, deservedly scoring an equaliser with Adam Wlison's low drive from the edge of the area. The Tigers were then guilty of searching for the winner, leaving too much room at the back. Defenders Adam Wilson and Luke Gothard were busy throughout the second half as Gildersome dominated to score two more goals and had it not been for a string of fine saves from Stuart Dyson, the ASD man of the match, the score would have been more than 3-1.

MAN OF THE MATCH – SCOTT
MATCH REPORTER- BOB DANN
A 1.30pm kick off on a warm sunny afternoon saw Ossett Town starting strongly with White up front causing problems and the back four of Sheen, Awad, Scott, and Hartshorne soaking up any early attacks.
But the pace and clinical finishing soon had Deighton one goal up.
For the rest of the half Ossett Town found it very difficult to handle the Deighton attacks and with half time approaching found themselves 4-0 down.
The second half was much of the same with attack after attack peppering the Ossett Town goal with the final score of 10-0.
Although the score line was very one sided Ossett never gave up trying to score and only towards the end let their heads go down.
Some notable performances were by Sheen and man of the match Scott, also White and Preston up front, but most of all a very gutsy performance by the new keeper Hall who managed to make some excellent saves.
As James said at the end of match team talk this match is best forgotten, you now have a two week break to regroup ready for the next game.
