OSSETT TOWN LADIES - NEWS

Ossett Town Ladies v Castleford White Rose

League leaders Town were back to their organised selves this week and controlled the game without getting loads of goals or getting it all their own way.
Town bossed the game from the off and played a passing game that generated chances, Gemma Howell netting first with a deflected shot from the edge off the area.
Town continued to get chances but not convert, Lisa Varley even tried a spectacular overhead kick that was cleared of the line, the woodwork was hit twice and a penalty missed so it was a relief when Tina Toohey calmly slotted inside the right post for a 2-0 half time lead.
Town resumed in control and Toohey got her second. Town had more chances with Jade Mullins hitting the woodwork for the second week in a row.
The game finished 3-0 with Town rightly proud of a solid display against a game White Rose side, Jessica Fennell was Player of the Match for an outstanding midfield display

Final Score
Ossett Town 3 Castleford White Rose 0

West Riding County Womens Football League Shield Quarter Finals

Top of the table Town were unsettled by basement side Middleton and knew they'd been in a battle this week.
Town lost centre back Nikii Howell after only 4 minutes and found themselves 2 goals down (both well taken headers from corners) after 9 minutes.
Lisa Varley pulled one back on 15 and it remained that way til half time.
Towns final subs were used at half time in an effort to take control but they found themselves a further goal down (again a header) after 56 mins.
Town created chances, Jodie Selby, Jade Mullins and Gemma Howell all hitting the woodwork, but Town lost Tina Toohey and Jodie Selby to injury and had to play with nine players for the final half hour.
Surprisingly the 9 seemed galvanized and seemed to find more room on Middletons tight pitch, but with 6 mins to go they were still 2 down until Keeley Dewhirst (Player of the Match) pulled one back and Emily Spink got two in the final five (chipping the keeper for her second) to leave Towns battered braves hanging on into injury time to secure a place in the semi-finals.

Final Score
Ossett Town 4 Middleton 3 - played at Middleton

Super Selby Scores (again), Toohey Takes Two, Town Top
2nd placed Ossett Town visited Hemsworth out for revenge for a beating in November. Town have looked stronger with every game this season and they really showed what they are capable of this week.
The strike force of Tina Toohey and Jodie Selby ripped into Hemsworth earning themselves joint player of the match. Tina bagged two and Jodie got four before both being replaced for a well earned rest, Jade Mullins made it seven after working hard down the right flank giving the Hemsworth left back a hard afternoon.
Hemsworth played their part and, although there was an element of luck about both their two goals, they created chances and made a solid Town back four work for ninety minutes.
As always Gemma Howell impressed in midfield and Heidi Spivey looked dangerous when replacing Tina Toohey.
Final score Hemsworth 2 Ossett Town 7

Town are now top with a game in hand over Hemsworth.

Next week is a home tie (2pm ko) against Middleton before resuming the league against third placed Heyside on the 7th.

West Riding Womens League Div One.

There is something magical about mid-week football in the wet under lights, and the magic certainly rubs off on Ossett Town Ladies FC!

Big derby game, thanks to Ossett Albion for staging it mid-week. Town had Butterflies in their stomachs then BANG! Gemma Howell puts the Town ahead after 4 minutes. A few minutes later BANG! Gemma doubles the lead. Now... Town show their class, a quick move by Keeley Dewhirst from a corner gives Lisa Varley a deflected goal, Jess Fennell skins the right back for the umpteenth time and sees her cross knocked home for an og'ie, then (who else) Jodie Selby bullies the centre back and forces home for a 5-0 half time lead.

Credit to Albion they changed their formation and the second half was a no goals ding-dong.

Final score Ossett Albion 0 - Ossett Town 5

Player of the match Jess Fennell but well done to all especially Towns highly disciplined back four!
Town's League Shield match was washed out on Sunday for the second week in a row, next Sunday away to Salts of Shipley with a chance to go top!

Match Report Ossett Albion Ladies vs Ossett Town Ladies 16.8.09

2nd Annual Daniel James Memorial Trophy - 1st Leg
The two Ossett ladies football sides met for the second year in aid of cancer charities and tee'd up an exciting 2nd leg for next Sunday.

Albion were at home and the Town ladies congratulated them on promotion to three divisions above them by applauding them onto the pitch.
Both teams used their full squads rotated through the game to gain as much from this pre-season game as they could, perhaps things won't be so friendly next week though. Ossett Towns Ladies shocked the home side by going two up in the first ten minutes, Albion got one back but Town stretched their lead to 4-1 at half time.

Albion got serious in the second half and Town fought to contain them but three successful long range strikes (including one absolute stunner) meant it was honours even at 4-4 and all to play for at Ingfield on the 23rd.

Kick off next week is 2pm, admission £3 for adults and £1 concessions all in aid of cancer charities.

Match Report Ossett Town Ladies FC vs Bradford Park Avenue 19.2.09

To paraphrase Robert Palmer "the lights are on and we're at home..............", Ossett Town Ladies played their first ever fixture under lights at Ingfield on Thursday and it was enough to leave the spectators addicted to ladies football.

Town started the night rooted to the bottom of the West Riding Womens League Division One whilst the visitors had only dropped two points all season and appeared confident of going on to take the title. However, after a winning comfortably in a cup tie the BPA manager had suggested (on their website) that Town would offer up an easy 6 points this season, oh dear!
Towns ladies got stuck in from the off and a very physical 1st half saw Keeley Dewhirst give Town the lead only for BPA to win a penalty, but Laura Patterson was equal to the task and Town breathed again.

Tina Toohey shot from 18 yards to make it 2-0 but BPA pulled one back just before half time.
The second half was evenly matched, with Towns keeper needing to make some excellent saves and Kelly Hirst coming close to increasing Towns' lead.
Final score Ossett Town 2 Bradford Park Avenue 1

Jody Wray played a real captains game in the centre of defence but Laura Patterson was the Pattersons Opticians Player of the Match for a superb performance.
Towns' next target is one more point to avoid relegation, BPA will go home to lick their wounds and re-start their title challenge.

Match Report Salts Ladies vs Ossett Town Ladies 11.1.09

Ossett Town travelled to Shipley for their first competitive match since the end of November and, as usual against Salts, it was a right old ding-dong. When these two sides meet it's always fair but firm with nothing much between them and this week Salts came away the victors 3-2 but Town could be proud of their battling spirit, the result could have gone either way.

Keeley Dewhirst was Pattersons Opticians Player of the Match with Clare Thomasson performing well in goal.

Towns next game is at home to Republica Internationale of Leeds on Sunday 18th Jan 2pm kick off.

Town's Ladies recorded their first league win of the season at Republica of Leeds.

A sweet move from a throw involving Keeley Dewhirst and Jody Wray resulted in a cross to the front post, Tina Toohey got in front of her marker and nearly burst the net with her first league goal of the season.
Having kept a clean sheet in goal in the first half Jodie Selby came out and added a second just after half time. There were some nervous moments when Republica pulled one back from a dubious penalty but Town restored order with Dewhirst placing the perfect through ball for Toohey to latch onto and give the keeper no chance for her second.

Final Score; Republica 1 Ossett Town Ladies 3

Patterson Opticians Player of the Match went to Jodie Selby.

It’s not Monkey Tennis!

Early September and a new work colleague hears me discussing the Women’s World Cup, “Monkey Tennis” he mutters. When challenged he explains “you can teach tennis to monkeys but I wouldn’t watch them play – same thing!”. This from someone who had been a regular player and had coached juniors for 5 years. Rather than get angry I suggested his waistline might benefit from some training, so perhaps he would join me and the ladies on a Monday evening. He is now a complete convert and has joined up as Assistant Coach paying particular attention to the keepers – welcome Andy Barber.

Town Ladies play at Springmill on Sunday afternoons, so if you’re there watching the boys or just walking the dog, stop for a moment and look over your shoulder. What you see may take you by surprise: yes, there are mixed abilities but they range from adequate to outstanding. All the ladies play with passion and commitment and demonstrate that this is possible without the less desirable elements that creep from the mens’ into the boys game. Town Ladies have a reputation
as a tough team who go in hard but fair and pick themselves up quickly then .
